Thanks everyone xx

Mr Englishman, you made me laugh, i liked that, thanks x

Beeka … its a way of controlling yourself through mind control, i think its similar to the effects yoga is meant to have on ur mind (without all the bendy positions).
It seems to be fab from what i’ve heard.
It costs hundreds to do the classes but i’m managing to get it through the NHS for £20 (that would be about $40)
Its a wonderful opportunity for me so i had to say yes c

admin answers:

I am not digging an epi either, and you don’t HAVE to have one just because you didn’t take ‘classes’.

Lamaze teaches you how to breathe through the pain. There are three types of breathing techniques and 4 stages of labor. I will go through them briefly with you and hopefully it will help you and keep you as comfortable as possible. Each contraction should last approx 60 seconds and the closest they should be is 60 seconds apart. So a cycle of contracts at the shortest is 2 minutes.

1st stage is when your body first goes into labor and you get very happy knowing that the baby is on it’s way. For this stage you do a slow pattern of breathing. Take one deep breath in to indicate the start of the contraction. Then you take a slow breath in for about 5 seconds and then out for about 5 seconds. The minute should have to take 4-6 breaths in and out. At the end of the contraction you take one more deep breath in and out, just like the first breath.

The second stage consists of harder contractions. This is when you do a shorter pattern of breathing. You take one deep breath in. Then you breath in and out for about one second each. You really have to be careful as you can hyperventilate. Practice this at home. You should take about 25-30 breaths in and out in the minute contraction. And one deep breath in and out just like the first one.

The third stage is when the contractions get very difficult and painful. You take one deep breath in and then start a whole different type of breathing. There are two types of patterns you can do depending on the intensity of the contraction. The first is like this:

he, he, he ohhhhh.

The other one is basically the same but you will be going from ’6′ he’s and one ohhhhhh down to ’5′, to ’4′ etc till you get to one each and then back up again to ’6′ he’s.

And you always start and end each contraction with a deep breath in.

The forth stage is Pushing, and all you need to do there is push that baby outta you! The nurses can assist you with that.

With the first 2 types of breathing patterns you can actually alternate within the contraction. As each contraction gets stronger you can start with the slow breathing moving up to the faster breating and then go back to the slower breathing.

This is very similiar to meditation, the concept is the same. You want to take your mid as far away from the pain as possible. Breathing and even having distractions will greatly help this. Music, a book, something that you like to look at or do.

Good luck.

We did no classes before hand. I honestly figured I would just forget everything they told me, or be in so much pain I wouldn’t be able to breath the way they instructed. So when I was in labour, I just found my own ways to cope…quietness when I was contracting, slow breathing to get through it. Some people like to be alone, I liked to have friends and family there to try to keep my mind of the pain in the early stages. I tried the bath and it made me feel worse, I walked a lot and that helped…when it came to pushing, my doctor told me to puch like i had to poop…and lone behold it worked GREAT lol. I pushed for 42 minutes and hse was out.

But thats just me and what worked for us. My sister in-law did the birthing classes and I think she liked them. To each their own!

I need a good online support community for young pregnant moms to be?!?

I’m 19 years old and I recently got pregnant (I’m 16 weeks)
I am from Toronto, Canada but moved to Bahrain (Middle East) about 6 months ago. I got pregnant in Bahrain. I am married to a wonderful man.

Anyway, I just feel so lonely here because there is no support community for young moms and services/classes like they have in Toronto! I was wondering if any new mom to be or mom has a favourite friendly forum site they like to go on and vent about what is going on in their pregnancy. I really would like to have a healthy pregnancy- physically and emotionally.

My interests are: cooking, and reading – having a natural pregnancy – hypnobirthing, water birth

I haven’t read up too much on natural pregnancy as there is almost no such thing here and the medical hospitals here with regards to childbirth are MUCH worse than they are in the US.

I had a hard time looking for these pregnancy books in any library but luckily I can order them but they usually come after a very long time and are very expensive!!

That is a great question. Wish I had the answer to it, as I am wondering it myself. I have heard that hypnobabies is a much better program. I’ve read a lot of forums about it on babycenter.com. I’d recommend posting your question in there. I think people have said they just ordered the “at home program” through the company and it was wonderful. I haven’t heard anything bad about hypnobabies, which is kind of a remake of hypnobirth (I think). Mothers have said it has made them so relaxed and so in-control of their bodies and pain. One said she actually went into the dr. smiling when she was in labor. Many of the nurses didn’t think she was actually going into labor, but it turns out she was fully dialated.
Again, I suggest getting into the conversations at that website. It provides much information. I plan to try hypnobabies after my husband and I conceive. So best of luck to you and your little one!!

$68????? CHEAP! Where I live I looked into it for my 2nd home birth. Thought it’d be neat to try. ONLY THING IS THIS: I get a workshop, a book, a birthplan and a cd for the birth, for $400!!! I don’t think it’s a scam and I really thought I’d like to try it. I’m not forking over that much money for a book and a cd and a birthplan. The book doesn’t have anything I don’t know except about 10 pages of hypnobirthing stuff. IF SOMEONE was going to be there for $400 during my actual labor helping me along, then maybe I’d consider that much money.

$68 sounds like a deal to me!

Actually, seeing this site I am thinking maybe I’ll purchase it! $68 isn’t quite that much and OMG it looks so much better than the one I’ve been looking into where I live! IT’S ONLINE! Thanks actually It’s actually 5 cents cheaper for Canada LOL

How important are childbirthing classes?

This is my first baby and at 23 weeks I hear now is the time to start classes.
All my girl friends advised me it was a waste of money.
They said you watch a video and learn breathing exercises (which you can learn from a book).
They all said they didn’t even use the breathing techniques they were taught because when you are in labor you do what you can to stay comfortable.
I dont think i will go to the classes…

But FYI- Some health insurances automatically pay for the classes so its mandatory if you go or not. Check with your insurance company. I know DHSH requires you to go….

I really like how it is a complete childbirth class. It teaches alot about everything. I research Hypnobirthing too. I was more drawn to Hypnobabies because it teaches eyes open hypnosis. You are still able to walk and talk while in hypnosis. I am learning that technique now and everytime I try it I feel like it is working even better. It comes with alot of different CDs. I just can’t say enough about it. I have yet to deliver but I have total confidence in myself and the program.
Hypnobirthing stories, anyone??

MY HUSBAND AND I RECENTLY FINISHED HYPNOBIRTHING CLASSES. I HAVE 2 OTHER CHILDREN IN WHICH I GAVE BIRTH NATURALLY. I’VE GOT ABOUT 6 WKS BEFORE I’M “DUE”. JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS EXPERIENCED HYPNOBIRTHING AND HOW IT WORKED FOR YOU COMPARED TO OTHER BIRTHS.
HYPNOBIRTHING IS WHERE YOU JUST LEARN HOW TO “TRAIN” YOURSELF TO GO INTO A DEEP STATE OF RELAXATION SO THAT DURING LABOR YOU’RE RELAXED AND VIRTUALLY PAIN FREE. A WOMAN’S BODY IS MADE TO BIRTH. DUE TO SOCIETY FROM SOME TIME AGO EVERYONE SEES LABOR AS SOMETHING THAT IS SUPPOSED TO HURT, THEREFORE WE ENTER PREGNANCY THINKING AUTOMATICALLY THAT WE ARE GOING TO BE IN PAIN AND WE TENSE UP WHEN LABOR BEGINS, MAKING THE CONTRACTIONS PAINFUL. WHEN YOU PRACTICE DEEP BREATHING TECHNIQUES YOU OVER TIME ARE TRAINING YOUR BODY AND MIND TO STAY RELAXED AND WHEN LABOR BEGINS YOUR BODY IS ALREADY RELAXED, KEEPING YOU FROM TENSING UP. (WHICH CAUSES CONTRACTIONS TO HURT.) ANIMALS BIRTH W/O PAIN AS DO WOMEN IN OTHER COUNTRIES, SO WHY SHOULD WE BE ANY DIFFERENT? IT’S BASICALLY ALL IN YOUR MIND. A GOOD WEBSITE TO GO IS WWW.HYPNOBIRTHING.COM FOR STORIES AND MORE INFO. YOU SHOULD CHECK IT OUT, IT’S REALLY DIFFERENT.

Cheesah,

First, let me congratulate you.

Although I do not have first hand experience with hypno-birthing, I see that you haven’t received any answers to your question. So, I thought I would share with you some second-hand information.

During the time that I was in post-baccalaureat training for hypnotherapy certification, this subject was extensively covered by Marlene, a Hypnotherapist with 30 years in practice. She was the facilitating hypnotherapist in many hypno-births. And, needless to say, she was a strong supporter of the technique.

Of course, my training was many years ago. And, I did not personally pursue this type of hypnotherapy practice. However, Marlene shared many particular case histories during her instruction. Her experiences were very positive, as recounted to us.

Now, I do have first-hand experience with the effect hypnotherapy has on chronic pain. And, given the success at using directed trance state and self-induced trance state to control and reduce the intensity of pain within the body, I’d say with full confidence, that hypno-birthing would be the way that I’d go.

There should be no fear that if needed, the altered state can be reversed. Even the deepest sonambulist can be ‘brought up’ or ‘brought out’ immediately. I’m sure you know this, but I’ll remind you that the subject voluntarilly enters the altered state, and is at all times fully in control.

According to Marlene, her experience was that the Mother is much more ‘present’ for the actual birthing experience. Because by using hypnosis, the pain associated with labor is so far reduced, that the Mother is more able to focus on feeling her own body and that of the babies, as the baby passes through the birthing canal. And according to Marlene, the mothers who’ve used this process feel much more connected to the child after the birth.

Also, according to Marlene, all of the hypno-births that she attended proceeded naturally, without the need for emergency intervention. And, afterward the mothers explained that they felt intense muscular movement, and some discomfort from the feeling of the mass of the baby’s body as it moved through the birth canal, but not the burning pain normally associated with labor.

Hope this helps.
Congratulations again, and Happy Birthing!

there are quite a few types of childbirth classes. some of the basics are Bradley, Lamaze, Birthing From Within, Hypnobabies, and Hypnobirthing. There are probably also hospital sponsored classes, your ob or midwife may offer classes or may have a reccomendation for you. There may even be an independent instructor around.

Each of these classes wil have a different birthing philosophy to offer. Bradley is dedicated to natural, non-invasive, un-medicated birth, lamaze aims to prepare women by informing them as to their choices, Birthing From Within offers a great deal of emotional preparation. Hypnobabies and Hypnobirthing are hypnosis based methods focused on “pain-free” delivery.

here are links to each of the sites

http://www.bradleybirth.com/

http://www.lamaze.org/

http://birthingfromwithin.com/

http://www.hypnobabies.com/

http://www.hypnobirthing.com/

you should be able to find local classes if any of these seem to be what you are looking for in a class

some things to remember about a hospital or practice based class is that the class will be geared towards how that particular hospital or ob/midwife practice prefers to operate. so you may not be exposed to the full range of birthing options.

to some extent that advice applies to any class. they all have some form of bias.

some things to think about:

what kind of birthing experience does the instructor have? my instructor had experienced both vaginal and cesarean birth for example.

is the instructor certified with any of these (or any of the previously mentioned)? (not that an uncertified instructor has nothing to offer)

http://www.alace.org/

http://www.icea.org/

http://www.childbirthinternational.com/

https://secure.serve.com/birthworks/index.html

(these sites should also be able to put you in touch with instructors in your area)

will your instructor come to your birth if you choose?

how many couples will be in the class?

how do former students feel about the class?

All good classes should include a section on nutrition, cesarean prevention and procedure, emergency delivery or at home delivery, and natural comfort measures. That’s in addition to the basics of birth processes, common interventions and their risks and benefits, positions for labor and delivery, and post-partum care.

i had an independant instructor who used to be a Bradley instructor. i loved her! i think we started classes at maybe 30 weeks or thereabouts and it was a lot to cram into such a short time.

I’ve sat through a hypnobirthing class and thought it had really great coping skills that it teaches and have seen it used effectively during birth and heard women rave about their almost pain-free births with this method (and some that were surprised by the pain that they weren’t prepared for). I haven’t been to a hypnobabies class but my understanding is that they give more information about other things as well that hypnobirthing might not cover (more information about pregnancy, birth and postpartum) and uses medical hypnosis techniques. Hypnobirthing was the first class and there is some controversy that hypnobabies stole the model.

They are very similar as well…you might consider meeting with each of the instructors and seeing who you bond with and who you think will deliver the information in a way that you can relate to.

And yes, if you are considering a drug-free birth (and obviously you are), I’d HIGHLY recommend taking a birthing class such as a hypno-class! Or, you might look into Birthing From Within as an alternative model – but of course I’m biased

Good luck at choosing a class!

Calling all mothers with experience in Hypnobirthing?

I am 27 weeks pregnant with my first child and have recently discovered hypnobirthing. It has always been my preference to have a drug-free home birth (providing all goes to plan) but it is only recently that I have been enlightened to the possibility of a relaxed child birth. Until then I was just expecting to be in agony and have to scream through it.

I invested in the book “Hypnobirthing: the Marie Mongon Method” and read it within 8 hours. Having familiarised myself with at least the theory of hypnobirthing, I am now determined to attempt this method of relaxed peaceful childbirth – for my daughters sake more than anything. The only problem is that I don’t think I will be able to take the supplementary hypnobirthing classes before my baby comes.

To begin with I was concerned about cost, but as there tend to be several concession-based systems in place in the UK, I decided to chase it up anyway on the off chance that I could pay in installments. However, upon searching the web, I have found that perhaps partly because it’s the lead up to Christmas, but mainly because hypnobirthing doesn’t seem to be at all prevalent in my area, it’s looking less and less as though I will have access to anything other than the internet, my book and the C.D. that came with it.

My question is this: As I feel I have a fairly good grasp of what the book is trying to communicate (despite it not being as able to actually show me in a practical way as they could in the lessons) Will I still be able to employ the methods I’ve read about in combination with the C.D. and still hope to achieve the kind of birth I wish to, or are the classes an essential part of hypnobirthing success?

Many many thanks in advance
all information is greatly appreciated

I used the Bradley method with all my births. It is similar to hypnobirthing. The book, Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way contains what you need to practice. If you read and practice daily for a few months, it is enough. I have had four births and it really does work. My husband took a picture of me during a contraction in transition. It looked like I was sleeping. I only had a moderate ache with labor. It was not as bad as menstrual cramps.

He induced me at 2:00 pm and I had her at 10:57 pm, i did not want the epidural, i was actually talking and laughing through my labor till 10:00 thats when I really felt the contractions. It felt so much better to be able to get up and walk after delivery than being wheeled in a room because of a epidural. I think you can do it.

Also goes by the name Matthew=all the same person. He was rejected by women when he actually put his own profile on match.com. He is not 45. He is 26.
Has Conned 6 women in 2 years. He actually does not live in Glenfield NSW and is not currently working in Nigeria on a construction job that he supposedly employed by a bank there that has just closed everything down. It all matches the news when you go on the internet google “Nigeria news on the bank”

He actually lives in Lagos, Nigeria… Goes by the name Chris McNamara on Match.com. Heart Doctor.
His profile picture on Match.com is not him. He copied Chris McNamara’s photo’s from the obituary section on the internet of the deceased Chris McNamara in Rolling Meadows USA in 2007 age 56.

Very sad really. He knows he has done wrong. He just wants out of his country. He tripped over himself with his words over 2 weeks of knowing him with what he was saying.
His web cam is broken.
He talks over the internet Yahoo messenger.
Very sexy voice.
Beautiful poetry.
Falls in love with you.
Says he will be with you forever.
Just the man you want to be with. But you haven’t met him or seen him on web cam??? Bit sus.

Says his wife died at childbirth, Parents died when he was five when he was in Dublin. Foster mum & him moved to America. Then moved to Glenfield NSW from Canberra when wife died. (said wife was Hawaiian)
Doesn’t know anyone here.

Not listed when call directory service to check for phone # etc. Brought his daughter (Sunshine) a dog called Tinkerbell. Sunshine likes barbie dolls and tea parties.. Even had a young girl talking in the background.

Always google any emails, names, info etc etc. Yes.

Yes he is lovely. Desperate for money to get a better life. Desperate to give his love to a woman but trapped in Nigeria.

Gives you hospital address: Malomo Hospital, 33 runsewe Estate Off Ahmoalya Rd, Ajye, Lagos State 23401. His mobile is 00112347058057521 & James the doctor is 0011234705194433.
But no answer when try mobile.. he says bad area. But he did call me from a mobile and it comes up unknown on your mobile.

Why would James the doctor allow Chris McNamara to take his drivers licence to the Western union to show ID to collect Money?? Sus.
Why would he leave his daughter alone?? Sus.

And anything under $1000 on the western union form.. they don’t have to have ID… sus. It’s all sus.

He used the money over the past 2 years from women to pay for his schooling. He wants out of Nigeria. Its rather sad when someone can’t be themselves and cruel of anyone to reject someone by saying they are BLACK. (replying to his emails on match.com when he was himself that is???… & girls saying “not into blacks” sorry. That’s appalling)

Unless we have lived in Nigeria.. can’t possibly know the “hell” place they live. Why is it sooo bad there when we have it sooo good here?

These men/women in Nigeria should however tell the truth about who they are as people. Use correct photo’s and NEVER INVOLVE PHOTO’S OF SOMEONE ELSE’S CHILDREN!!!! OR SOMEONE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER.
THEY SHOULD NEVER TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN IF THEY CAN’T SHOW YOU ON WEB CAM WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE, THAT THEY ARE REAL.

It doesn’t matter if we as people are “Black” or “White” in colour. We are all people and all deserve the right as a human spiritual person.

It’s these people in Nigera that play with the emotional mind that is not the correct thing to do. It hurts when you have been lied to about a sexy voice & beautiful poetry and words that to find out they just do not match the picture or face & the confusion after they ask for help for a little girl…when they ask for help $$. Especially when they supposedly have a house car and money here in Australia.
That the banks here can’t get money to him?
He won’t call the consulate office. Says they don’t understand what he is going through.

If he is in a bad way because of what the government had done to him then he should have rung the consulate office immediately. & knowing Nigeria is not a good place. Why would a rich man take a young girl to work with him in Nigeria?? Why would he take the risk of his daughter getting sick??

Mo-vaka-loa. (Bex, Matthew) is his name not Chris McNamara. He lives in Nigeria, that’s why.

Very sexy voice though. Kind heart and yes he fell in love with someone that he would love to have but he is stuck in a country that he doesn’t want to be.

Let just stop the lies ya.
I lied to him by giving him a false address for me when he was going to get his Aussie bank to post me a cheque so I could take it to Western Union to get $$ to him.

He’s a country guy…wife died during childbirth, along with the baby…heartbroken…not interested in anyone…sister convinces him to meet her. They meet…there’s tension at first. Lots of horses in the movie. Beautiful horses. At the end, they fall in love. Last scene is the guy walking in leading a horse (symbolic of a previous custom where if the girl accepts the horse left outside her tent as the bride price, that means she accepts the guy) into the place (the city) where girl is hosting some kind of photo-gallery-show. Falls into his arms (well…not literally). The end.

Rate my writing? =) Pretty Please?

I’m writing this story for the Watty awards, so it’s already posted somewhere. I’m just wondering, does this sound right to you? Anything you would change?

Prologue.

Tokyo, Japan.
1:52 PM

“Adhesive glue, Charlotte? Really?”

I sighed, picking at the loose threads of the armchair. The principle’s office was dark and damp. The only light came from the large set of french windows across from me, and the room seemed to be filled with stale, muggy air. I felt perspiration on my neck and noticed the little strands of silky blonde hair sticking to my neck. I was wondering, as I had been for nearly ten minutes, why a private girl’s school wouldn’t have air conditioning. I then focused on the jingling of Chie’s charm bracelet, half-ignoring my principle’s angry scolding, and I smiled. She always did that when she was really annoyed. And to be honest with you, Mrs. Ito had a very annoying voice.

Oh, how rude of me. My name is Charlotte DeCalloway. My father, James DeCalloway, owns Denki Corp, (and does some other, less-than-respectable business on the side, I’m sure.), a very popular, and very powerful computer and weapons manufacturing company. This makes him the third richest man on earth. I, the only heiress to such a lovely fortune, am currently trapped inside the principle’s office of The Lotus Blossom private school for girls. Why you might ask? Because I’m an independent, self-thinking woman who decided to take desperate matters into her own hands.

Pssht.

In reality, I put adhesive glue on a couple of lunch benches, which Toshiko and her bitch-crew just happened to sit on. The force of them trying to stand up when they had realized what I had done just happened to rip their skirts in half, right in front of everyone. Which, of course, had to be the most embarrassing thing that’s happened in years. And possibly the best thing that’s happened to me in a while.

Suddenly, the room went quiet. Chie stopped fidgeting with her bracelet. I looked up. Mrs. Ito was staring out the great window, her shoulder’s tense. Years of running a high school had left it’s toll on her physically. Her now-silvery locks were gathered into a high, neat bun, a small lilac lotus flower pinned in precisely. Creases lined her face, making her look wise, yet stressed all at the same time. Her shoulder’s were slumped as if she were carrying the weight of the entire school on her back. She was only forty five.

“I can’t do this anymore, Charlotte.” She muttered. She turned back to me, her eyes hard and unsympathetic.

Uh oh.

“I’m sorry, truly. I wish I could give you a mere suspension, keep you here and perhaps straighten you out.” She frowned disapprovingly. “However, the parent’s of those poor girls are terribly upset. What d’you think they would say if I let you stay here? They aren’t paying 25 000 dollars a year so their children can get into fights with you.” She sighed.

“Mrs. Hu,” She said, speaking to Chie. “Charlotte will be suspended for the following two weeks. She’ll have to see to her teachers for her homework, and for her reading lists. It is expected that she comes back with a little more manners.” Mrs. Ito eyed Chie, and I could see it took quite a bit for chie not to roll her eyes at the woman and stomp out. My nanny had as much patience for this woman as I did.

Mrs. Ito walked primly out of the room, leaving the door open for us to leave.

I looked at my Nanny. Her short, choppy black hair framed her round face perfectly, making her appear youthful. Tiny lines were sketched into her face as well. Tiny laugh lines, tiny frown lines. She looked so different from the younger, beautiful woman who appeared in every single photo album I owned. Chie raised me, and she was everything I’d want a real mother to be. My actual mother died in childbirth, leaving my father alone with me. Since he was either too busy, or couldn’t be bothered to care, he got this brilliant thought that he’d hand me off to someone else. I know I should have angst for this, but I don’t. I know I should miss my mother and want my father to show me love like a normal dad, but I didn’t see the point in missing something I never had. Chie was all I ever needed. Chie was stern, true, but she was also very loving. She was always there to kiss my boo-boos, check for monsters or play Barbie for hours on end. Every Christmas, every birthday I spent with her. When I got older, she took me for “girl-days” at the spa, or shopping. She never failed to ask me about the evil girls at school or the cute boys who worked at the Bubble-tea stand.

Chie glared at me from the corner of her eyes. I winced and rolled my shoulders appologetically. Chie merely rolled her eyes, sighed and stood up, and walked out of the room, leaving me alone. She was definitely pissed off.

I followed her quietly, always a few cautious steps behind

A “principal” is a school administrator. A “principle” is is a value, part of a moral code. Apologetically was also misspelled, and Chie’s name isn’t always capitalized. These are little things, to be sure, but they make your writing look bad.

Now, I don’t know if this is basically supposed to be a private exchange school, but I’m not sure why the principal is putting the money amount into dollars. If you’re going to use a Japanese setting, may as well include enough cultural trappings that the reader can recognize it as Japan, right? The fully-censored swearwords may just be because of Yahoo, and I can understand that, but if you’re going to write around a curse, write around a curse, don’t chicken out and black-bar your own writing. It chips at your fourth wall, and unless you’re trying to get meta-fictional, the fourth wall is there for a reason: to maintain a reader’s willing suspension of disbelief in this fictional world.

Speaking of which, the info dump in the third paragraph puts the brakes on the momentum of your plot and I always find that the main character introducing herself to the reader in medias res catapults me right out of the story and batters my suspension of disbelief. Try to save it until the information can come out naturally.

If you gain weight it is possible, because the breast carries fatty tissue. How much fatty tissue, though, depends on the person. For me, My breasts are the first thing to gain and lose poundage. I have been as small as an A, and after pregnancy I am a DD, even after losing a lot of poundage. I have also known women who are very large and don’t have large breasts, and their breasts don’t get much bigger during pregnancy. Good luck on your endeavor!!!

I was told the more active you are the easier childbirth will be. I swam a lot during my first pregnancy and honestly when my daughter was born I didn’t have any complications and it didn’t hurt as much as I thought it would and how everyone was saying it would. Just walk a decent amount go swimming in an indoor pool if it’s to cold outside. It helps move your pelvic bone to get ready for labor. Don’t strain yourself to much though you still want to relax a little but just do your normal things during the day and rest when you need to. Good luck

I need success stories…are formula-fed babies ever fine the way they are?

I need some moral support. I am the proud mother of a beautiful six month old boy. However, he’s starting to get fat. It’s yet another problem one could trace to formula feeding, I guess.

During my pregnancy and during my preparation for natural childbirth, I took breastfeeding classes, bought a double breast pump (in preparation for continuing to breastfeed right through age 2 (!) as recommended by the World Health Organization), nipple cream and pads, a breastfeeding pillow, books on the subject, etc. Then, three days after my baby was born and with no sign of my milk coming in, I agreed to supplement with formula. After having tried some methods like SNS, and breastfeeding for 45 minutes at a time every couple of hours for weeks, an expert lactation consultant finally looked at my breasts and saw “hypoplastic tubular” breasts, a condition related to a PCOS-like complex of symptoms. Anyway, I feel it necessary to explain all this on here, to try and prevent breastfeeding fanatics to tell me I can still breastfeed. I have tried Goat’s Rue, fenugreek, etc., etc. I’m trying something called “Shavatari” right now. I still give my baby the few, hand-expressed drops I can produce each day….just in case it helps.

Anyway, he’s been on Earth’s Best organic dairy-based formula pretty much since the second week after birth. His weight is now in 80th percentile, while his length is only 60th. I am overweight myself, and very worried that my gorgeous boy is going to be a little chubster! It’s nothing to laugh about, it’s like a mark for life.

I really need to find out if any formula-fed babies are brilliant, successful, non-diabetic, thin, fit, and healthy (???) Are there any famous Nobel prizewinners or anything who have been formula fed? How about any athletes? I need moral support, because I don’t have a choice!

Also, do you have any advice about formula feeding and not letting your baby get fat? Thanks.
Wow, Melissa is…, “can we say” beey…?

Who is superficial here??? I am feeling pretty darn guilty about not being able to breastfeed and to me, that is not superficial. It is clear that breastfeeding is ideal nutrition for babies, and I feel badly about not doing it, for my baby’s well-being. I love him a lot.
Thanks everyone else…. my baby is 20 lbs 8 oz. Maybe it’s even a higher percentile for weight(?)…I’m not sure.

Dr Sears’ book says the charts are wrong, because they include formula-fed babies in the average, and that proper weights should be even lower than the charts indicate…ugh.
Yes, if you are ever approaching the obese range (which most women only approach during pregnancy and even then, many don’t), you will know how horrible it can feel. In fact, being overweight is extremely dangerous for health, and heart, vascular, endocrine, etc. problems are not superficial. I am really struggling to take off my pregnancy weight…I had reached a healthy weight prior to that (I say “healthy,” but it was 150 pounds, which is really high for some people.) At over 200 pounds now and 5’6″, I REALLY do not want this condition for my son!

If you have had past experience with nausea related to anesthesia, chances are you will have that your whole life. But there is no way to tell how bad it will be. I don’t suffer from this, but my mother does. Anytime she has anesthesia of any kind, she gets severely nauseated and does sometimes throw up. It seems to be that you either do it or you don’t – and it looks like you do. So yes, that could very possibly happen.

You have got a couple of weeks. Go to your local library and get a couple of books about birthing. They will give you a lot more explanation than I can explain here. It’s always good to have a book around that you can pick up and read as things occur to you. There are lots of Lamaze and Bradley method books available if you are interested in trying natural childbirth.

Most women know when labor starts. Very rarely do you get someone who doesn’t realize it. Usually, it’s someone who has had at least one child before, and the labor just goes so fast that they are not prepared. Chances are you will know. Your doctor should have already given you some info on when they want you to go to the hospital – if not, ask for it. They may give you a reference sheet to keep at home.

HypnoBirthing?

Hi, I posted this on the pregnancy board too, but just wanted extra input from mothers who’ve given birth to their babies!

I was just wondering if anyone is undertaking/ has undertaken a HypnoBirthing class in preparation for childbirth? Having bought the book by Marie Mongan, I’ve seriously been considering booking classes to prepare for B-day!

It’s really important to me to give birth as naturally as possible, and I don’t like the idea of being out of it on painkillers. So I’d just like to hear how HypnoBirthing worked for anyone else?
Also, I’m in the UK, I’ve got an idea of which HypnoBirthing coach I’ll use. I found her through the official HypnoBirthing website, so I should be able to assume she’s qualified in coaching the HypnoBirthing course.

It is an “intervention as needed” approach to a healthy birth. They do in fact give you pain medications if you please because it is totally natural to want to alleviate pain.

I chose this method for last 3 births and my next to come. ; )

Prepared child birth classes tell you everything you can expect from hospital protocol when you come to deliver.

You can expect constant fetal monitoring, being forced to stay in your bed, a constant iv, intrusive internal exams, medications to speed up your labor that cause pain, an epidural to take away that pain and being totally unable to feel anything from the waste down, followed by the inability to feel the urge to push often resulting long periods of ineffective pushing and in them cutting you down there to help get the baby out and also baby who is floppy and tired from the medications they give you.

I attended the “prepred child birth” before my first child I didn’t know any better at the time.

They aren’t in my state unless there is a requirement. For instance, in order to have a VBAC at my hospital, you are required to attend a class. That would be covered by Medicaid. At the hospital my Mom works at, they have a class specifically for Medicaid patients that is done in 3 hours.

Personally, I think most childbirth classes are a waste of money. Except maybe for the breathing part, all that crap can be covered in one 3 hour class. Better spent is a class on infant care and safety, especially dealing with things to do when the baby is screaming bloody murder. They’ve shown that those kind of classes actually reduce child abuse.

I have found in my experience, docs dont make much of a difference..Some of them may, but you always have the right to refuse induction. I think people dont take charge enough of their own births, going to the hospital too soon, etc…IF only they knew what could happen, instead of what usually happens, the world would be a better place..So, call around, you may have to do some interviewing, and good luck.

admin answers:

If you avoid interventions, you avoid further intervention and each individual intervention has a risk of serious side effects. Epidurals in and of themselves are both risky AND cause the need for more interventions (though it sounds like for you the opposite was true).

Either way, avoid the first intervention and you will likely avoid them all. To that end most midwives, and some OBs are very low intervention. Or you can give birth at home. Also educate yourself, remember just because a doctor recommends something doesn’t mean a) you have to concent nor b) they are right or even have YOUR best interest in mind. Many interventions are based on defensive medicine -that is what prevents them from loosing a court case should they be sued.

Honestly I had a natural child birth and it wasn’t painful.

I have always preferred homeopathic remedies to chemicals, and when i was pregnant that didnt change.
When i had the flu, i ate ginger root and the stomach upset subsided.
When i had a cold, i ate astragulus and eccinacea in my soup and salads and it greatly improved.
When my lower back started going nuts, and yoga could only offer me so much, i turned to White Flower oil, and my world got so much better.
For delivery, after an evening of gentle labor preparation and talking to the babe, Making love for the last time with my sweet one and listening to records – when the serious contractions came i took blue cohosh and golden seal in addition to the 3 cups of red raspberry leaf tea i had been drinking daily and wowwee was that little one out in no time flat.
Of course they work, they’ve worked for centuries. How do you think people cured themselves?
If you are thinking about homeopaths, though, make sure you read up, because some aren’t safe for pregnancy.
