When was hypnosis for childbirth first used in western society?

I believe that hypnosis for childbirth in western society was used at least 150 years ago but I am unable to find any references to support this. I understand that that ancient Greek physicians used hypnotic methods with birthing women. What I am looking for is references to modern western culture and hypnosis for childbirth. If you answer kindly supply any references that you have.
Thanks Tom R. I didn’t know that it was recorded in cuneiform writings. But I what I am asking is who started using hypnosis for childbirth first in the last 150 to 200 years because before that the art of hypnosis had been lost for centuries.

Pregnancy Hypnosis Childbirth?

I have heard a little about hypnobirthing. I think it is a little bit similar to the Bradley method. I used the Bradley method with all four of mine. It really works great. However, I think the 9th month is probably too late to be able to learn what you need to be able to do the Bradley method. It took at least two months of daily practice for me to be able to do the Bradley method. I used the book, Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way.

You may want to check out HYpnotherapists who specialise in something called Hypnobirthing, there are many around and facilitate a pain free childbirth.

Its less traumatic for the baby as well if you are still fully functioning physically during childbirth. Speak to some hypnotherpaist and shop around and maybe consider going for a session with one that you trust.

I am a clinical hypnotherapist and have successfully helped many people with pain relief through hypnosis. I do not specialise in Hypnobirthing myself as I chose to specialise in something else.

Just do a search on the net for Hypnotherapists, there are many available, and check for their specialisms. Always go with a therapist who is registered with a UK national body like the NCH, or the GHR. And look forward to a pain free childbirth.

Congratulations and best wishes BTW

I was wondering if the visualizations are different from Hypnobirthing, and if you could tell me one or two of them so I can at least use those for my labor.

Bonnie In Hypnobabies Birth Visualization exercise, Hypno-couples can mentally practice entering labor, practicing their comfortable birthing techniques and giving birth easily and in a very detailed and personal way. This “mental birthing rehearsal” is very important to the process of easy and comfortable birthing and is done many times until the hypno-baby is born, helping program the subconscious mind to produce exactly what the couple wants.

Hypnobabies is a complete childbirth education course that also teaches Hypnobabies mothers so that they can enter hypnosis, deepen it themselves and remain mobile during labor, completely comfortable at all times. Hypnobabies have no drugs in their systems when they are born, and are able to nurse, breathe well and interact with their happy parents immediately. Goal – No drugs for Baby; No Pain for Mommy. Fantastic!

Hypnosis is a very powerful tool for creating new belief systems and powerful physical effects, so it simply help women and their partners learn to empower themselves in this wonderful way for their baby’s birth.

I used Hypnobabies with my last birth. I had a comfortable un-medicated birth. It was awesome. You can see my birth video and read my birth story at www.pregnancybirthandbabies.com

I also have gathered over 200 Hypnobabies Birth stories there from moms on the Hypnobabies Yahoo Group.

I also used the Baby Come Out CD. My second baby was born at 42 weeks and Bryson was born at 41 weeks 4 days. So a little sooner. I think I just grow my babies longer.

I am glad you are looking into Hypnobabies! I think you will love it if you try it! I am now a Hypnobabies Instructor and a Hypno-doula, so I have seen many women birth comfortable using their tools. It is amazing!

admin answers:

**Don’t let this worry you. Only 5% of births have the baby is poor position.**

Yes, I have regrets, but they are not the usual. Before the birth, I was fully committed to natural childbirth and believed everything that I heard about the dangers of interventions and how often they were performed unnecessarily.

All turned out well, but in the hospital, they should have given me a C-section or intervened much sooner. It wasn’t until I agreed to internal monitoring that the medical staff went into controlled panic mode, cranked up pitocin as high as possible and went silent.

When they would finally tell me what was wrong, they told me that the baby’s heart rate was unstable. It turned out that my son was facing full left and coming down in malposition. This could have killed him or caused severe brain damage. By the time it was found, it was really too late to do anything as all the OR’s were full with cases more urgent than mine.

During pushing, I had to lie on my side with one leg fully in the air to try to ease the pressure off the cord which was compressing. My husband started crying and begged me to push with all my might at the end. Suddenly, I felt cutting, got a full front to back episitomy, felt the baby being yanked out of me and delivered a baby who wasn’t breathing. He pinked up and cried after 45 minutes.

This time around, if there is any sign of danger, I want a C-section or full-on interventions. The guilt I felt over not requesting a C-section and thinking naively that everything will be fine lasted for months and still lingers togday.
