Your questions about hypnobirthing classes

George asks…

With hypnobirthing- do you have to attend classes or can you teach yourself using books?

According to the website the closest class is almost 2 hours away.

admin answers:

That is a great question. Wish I had the answer to it, as I am wondering it myself. I have heard that hypnobabies is a much better program. I’ve read a lot of forums about it on babycenter.com. I’d recommend posting your question in there. I think people have said they just ordered the “at home program” through the company and it was wonderful. I haven’t heard anything bad about hypnobabies, which is kind of a remake of hypnobirth (I think). Mothers have said it has made them so relaxed and so in-control of their bodies and pain. One said she actually went into the dr. smiling when she was in labor. Many of the nurses didn’t think she was actually going into labor, but it turns out she was fully dialated.
Again, I suggest getting into the conversations at that website. It provides much information. I plan to try hypnobabies after my husband and I conceive. So best of luck to you and your little one!!

Robert asks…

Does anyone know if this hypnobirthing class is a scam?

http://www.hypnosisbirth.com/index.php

It doesn’t really look like it is but I just wondered if anyone knew for sure. I would like to make sure it is perfectly safe before I just hand over $68.
Thanks
I know hypnobirthing is not a scam. I have friends that have done it and my grandma even did it. I was just wondering if this specific online class was a scam.

admin answers:

$68????? CHEAP! Where I live I looked into it for my 2nd home birth. Thought it’d be neat to try. ONLY THING IS THIS: I get a workshop, a book, a birthplan and a cd for the birth, for $400!!! I don’t think it’s a scam and I really thought I’d like to try it. I’m not forking over that much money for a book and a cd and a birthplan. The book doesn’t have anything I don’t know except about 10 pages of hypnobirthing stuff. IF SOMEONE was going to be there for $400 during my actual labor helping me along, then maybe I’d consider that much money.

$68 sounds like a deal to me!

Actually, seeing this site I am thinking maybe I’ll purchase it! $68 isn’t quite that much and OMG it looks so much better than the one I’ve been looking into where I live! IT’S ONLINE! Thanks actually :) It’s actually 5 cents cheaper for Canada LOL

Daniel asks…

How important are childbirthing classes?

This is my first baby and at 23 weeks I hear now is the time to start classes. I’ve looked into it and Hypnobirthing, Lamaze, and the Bradley Method classes all are $300-$500 for the series. Is it worth the money? My fiancee feels like it’s something women have been doing since the dawn of time and I don’t need to be taught but I was considering a natural birth and I think it will be very difficult without any training. What did you do?

admin answers:

All my girl friends advised me it was a waste of money.
They said you watch a video and learn breathing exercises (which you can learn from a book).
They all said they didn’t even use the breathing techniques they were taught because when you are in labor you do what you can to stay comfortable.
I dont think i will go to the classes…

But FYI- Some health insurances automatically pay for the classes so its mandatory if you go or not. Check with your insurance company. I know DHSH requires you to go….

Good Luck!

Betty asks…

HypnoBirthing?

I was just wondering if anyone is undertaking a HypnoBirthing class in preparation for childbirth? Having bought the book by Marie Mongan, I’ve seriously been considering booking classes to prepare for B-day!

It’s really important to me to give birth as naturally as possible, and I don’t like the idea of being out of it on painkillers. So I’d just like to hear how HypnoBirthing worked for anyone else?

admin answers:

I am not studying the Hypnobirthing course but I am studying Hypnobabies. I love Hypnobabies! My husband and I are doing the homestudy course. I really like how it is a complete childbirth class. It teaches alot about everything. I research Hypnobirthing too. I was more drawn to Hypnobabies because it teaches eyes open hypnosis. You are still able to walk and talk while in hypnosis. I am learning that technique now and everytime I try it I feel like it is working even better. It comes with alot of different CDs. I just can’t say enough about it. I have yet to deliver but I have total confidence in myself and the program. I know that I am going to love my birth and I can’t wait for my birthing time to begin!

Good Luck!

Richard asks…

Hypnobirthing stories, anyone??

MY HUSBAND AND I RECENTLY FINISHED HYPNOBIRTHING CLASSES. I HAVE 2 OTHER CHILDREN IN WHICH I GAVE BIRTH NATURALLY. I’VE GOT ABOUT 6 WKS BEFORE I’M “DUE”. JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS EXPERIENCED HYPNOBIRTHING AND HOW IT WORKED FOR YOU COMPARED TO OTHER BIRTHS.
HYPNOBIRTHING IS WHERE YOU JUST LEARN HOW TO “TRAIN” YOURSELF TO GO INTO A DEEP STATE OF RELAXATION SO THAT DURING LABOR YOU’RE RELAXED AND VIRTUALLY PAIN FREE. A WOMAN’S BODY IS MADE TO BIRTH. DUE TO SOCIETY FROM SOME TIME AGO EVERYONE SEES LABOR AS SOMETHING THAT IS SUPPOSED TO HURT, THEREFORE WE ENTER PREGNANCY THINKING AUTOMATICALLY THAT WE ARE GOING TO BE IN PAIN AND WE TENSE UP WHEN LABOR BEGINS, MAKING THE CONTRACTIONS PAINFUL. WHEN YOU PRACTICE DEEP BREATHING TECHNIQUES YOU OVER TIME ARE TRAINING YOUR BODY AND MIND TO STAY RELAXED AND WHEN LABOR BEGINS YOUR BODY IS ALREADY RELAXED, KEEPING YOU FROM TENSING UP. (WHICH CAUSES CONTRACTIONS TO HURT.) ANIMALS BIRTH W/O PAIN AS DO WOMEN IN OTHER COUNTRIES, SO WHY SHOULD WE BE ANY DIFFERENT? IT’S BASICALLY ALL IN YOUR MIND. A GOOD WEBSITE TO GO IS WWW.HYPNOBIRTHING.COM FOR STORIES AND MORE INFO. YOU SHOULD CHECK IT OUT, IT’S REALLY DIFFERENT.

Cheesah,

First, let me congratulate you.

Although I do not have first hand experience with hypno-birthing, I see that you haven’t received any answers to your question. So, I thought I would share with you some second-hand information.

During the time that I was in post-baccalaureat training for hypnotherapy certification, this subject was extensively covered by Marlene, a Hypnotherapist with 30 years in practice. She was the facilitating hypnotherapist in many hypno-births. And, needless to say, she was a strong supporter of the technique.

Of course, my training was many years ago. And, I did not personally pursue this type of hypnotherapy practice. However, Marlene shared many particular case histories during her instruction. Her experiences were very positive, as recounted to us.

Now, I do have first-hand experience with the effect hypnotherapy has on chronic pain. And, given the success at using directed trance state and self-induced trance state to control and reduce the intensity of pain within the body, I’d say with full confidence, that hypno-birthing would be the way that I’d go.

There should be no fear that if needed, the altered state can be reversed. Even the deepest sonambulist can be ‘brought up’ or ‘brought out’ immediately. I’m sure you know this, but I’ll remind you that the subject voluntarilly enters the altered state, and is at all times fully in control.

According to Marlene, her experience was that the Mother is much more ‘present’ for the actual birthing experience. Because by using hypnosis, the pain associated with labor is so far reduced, that the Mother is more able to focus on feeling her own body and that of the babies, as the baby passes through the birthing canal. And according to Marlene, the mothers who’ve used this process feel much more connected to the child after the birth.

Also, according to Marlene, all of the hypno-births that she attended proceeded naturally, without the need for emergency intervention. And, afterward the mothers explained that they felt intense muscular movement, and some discomfort from the feeling of the mass of the baby’s body as it moved through the birth canal, but not the burning pain normally associated with labor.

Hope this helps.
Congratulations again, and Happy Birthing!
